Message from the Executive Director

The APUEA Secretariat is preparing for the upcoming APUEA District Energy events in June (Vancouver, Canada) and July (Xian, China). APUEA also will participate in Asia Utility Week in Bangkok In June. In this newsletter you can read more about our upcoming events, including two events we are hosting in Vancouver on 11-14 June, in conjunction with the IDEA2018 conference: our Workshop “District Energy in Warmer Climates,” co-hosted with IDEA, and the APUEA Annual General Meeting.

The Association continues to grow, and in this newsletter we are glad to welcome and introduce the District Energy in Cities Initiative, an initiative of UN Environment. The 2018 APUEA Events Calendar at the end of this newsletter outlines the planned events for the remainder of the year. We hope to see you at one or more of these important gatherings!

Mikael Jakobsson, Executive Director, Asia Pacific Urban Energy Association

Membership Section – Introducing the District Energy in Cities Initiative

Each edition of the APUEA Newsletter highlights one of our members. In this issue, it is our pleasure to introduce one of our Affiliate Members, the District Energy in Cities Initiative.

The District Energy in Cities Initiative is a multi-stakeholder partnership coordinated by UN Environment, with financial support from DANIDA, the Global Environment Facility, and Italian Ministry of Environment and Protection of Land and Sea.

As one of the six accelerators of the Sustainable Energy for All (SEforALL) Energy Efficiency Accelerator Platform, launched at the Climate Summit in September 2014, the Initiative is supporting market transformation efforts to shift the heating and cooling sector to energy efficient and renewable energy solutions. The Initiative supports local and national governments to build local know-how and implement enabling policies that will accelerate investment in modern – low-carbon and climate resilient – district energy systems. UN Environment is currently providing technical support to 25 cities in four pilot countries (Chile, China, India and Serbia) and ten replication countries (Argentina, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Colombia, Egypt, Malaysia, Mongolia, Morocco, Russia, the Seychelles and Tunisia).

About the Asia Pacific Urban Energy Association (APUEA)

The APUEA is an initiative of the International Institute for Energy Conservation (IIEC), a not-for-profit organization that has been promoting sustainable energy and environmental solutions in developing and emerging economies – including in the fast developing urban sector – for more than three decades. The APUEA platform promotes public and private sector collaboration to develop sustainable urban energy systems that support livable cities across the Asia Pacific region. The Association's online portal serves as an information hub to support city policymakers, program managers, and other stakeholders in the design, development, and implementation of sustainable urban energy systems. Through this portal, APUEA events, and continuous outreach to its members, the Association shares international and regional best practices for planning and implementing sustainable urban energy systems – including policies and regulations, business models, and technologies for implementing district heating and cooling, smart grids, energy efficiency improvements, and renewable energy systems.
