Message from the Executive Director

We celebrated APUEA’s first anniversary in July 2018 and we are now entering a new phase of its operation. The Secretariat has expanded to six professionals providing a range of services to APUEA’s ever increasing membership. During the first-year, efforts were made to establish a solid foundation and in the coming year we will continue the work to build strong relationships with local governments in the region. In order to maximize the impact of the Association’s activities, our special focus this year will be on China, India and Southeast Asia.

In this newsletter you can read about the new issue of the APUEA Magazine featuring Integrated Urban Energy. You can also read more about our recent and future activities.

The Association continues to grow, and in this newsletter we are glad to welcome and introduce the Qatar District Cooling Company. Please take note of the 2018 APUEA Events Calendar and we hope to see you at one or more of these important gatherings!

Mikael Jakobsson, Executive Director, Asia Pacific Urban Energy Association

Recent APUEA Activities

IDEA2018 – Local Solutions, Global impact

APUEA attended IDEA2018, the 109th annual conference and tradeshow of the International District Energy Association (IDEA) during June 11-14 in Vancouver, Canada. The event attracted 800 attendees from 17 countries worldwide. As a collaborating partner of IDEA, APUEA co-hosted several events during IDEA2018, including the workshop: “District Energy for Warmer Climates”, a networking reception, and the APUEA annual general meeting.

The District Energy for Warmer Climate workshop attracted registrations from more than 100 experts from 65 companies, universities and organizations in the energy field including executives, technical managers, sales and marketing managers, business and project developers. The good turnout is a testament to the increased interest in the growing market for district energy in the Asia-Pacific region.

The APUEA networking reception was held in the main exhibit hall in connection with the signing ceremony for the collaboration between IDEA and KDHC (Korea District Heating Corporation). After a short introduction by APUEA’s Executive Director Mikael Jakobsson, the conference audience had the chance to mingle with representatives from APUEA and other APUEA members to learn more about the Association and the ongoing and upcoming activities in the Asia Pacific region.

The APUEA platform promotes public and private sector collaboration to develop sustainable urban energy systems that support livable cities across the Asia Pacific region. The Association's online portal serves as an information hub to support city policymakers, program managers, and other stakeholders in the design, development, and implementation of sustainable urban energy systems. Through this portal, APUEA events, and continuous outreach to its members, the Association shares international and regional best practices for planning and implementing sustainable urban energy systems – including policies and regulations, business models, and technologies for implementing district heating and cooling, smart grids, energy efficiency improvements, and renewable energy systems.
