APUEA Commences Operation

Following the announcement of the establishment of the Asia Pacific Urban Energy Association (APUEA) on 8 June 2017 at the Asia Clean Energy Forum in Manila, Philippines, the Association formally commenced operation on schedule on 1 July 2017. Details on the APUEA’s scope and membership benefits are accessible on the online portal at www.apuea.org.

At the first meeting of the APUEA Advisory Board on 7 July 2017, the Board endorsed APUEA’s Operational Plan (2017-2018). The Advisory Board will review the Association’s progress quarterly. The APUEA Secretariat has initiated a membership drive targeting stakeholders across the spectrum of urban energy system issues, to secure a base membership of at least 150 organizations that prioritize sustainable urban energy systems.

APUEA Expands its Advisory Board

APUEA welcomes two representatives from the Asia Development Bank (ADB) to its Advisory Board, to help guide the Association during the initial phase of its operation. Mr. Ashok Bhargava (Director) and Mr. Teruhisa Oi (Principal Energy Specialist) from the Energy Division, East Asia Department bring decades of combined experiences in urban energy issues to the Board.

The Advisory Board comprises representatives of the Danish Board of District Heating (DBDH), Euro Heat & Power (EHP), United Nations Environment Programme (UN Environment), Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the International Institute for Energy Conservation (IIEC).

APUEA’s First Publication

Following the recommendation of the Advisory Board, the APUEA Secretariat has commenced preparation of its first publication, “Urban Energy in the Asia Pacific Region – an Overview.” This publication will provide insights into the challenges and opportunities related to sustainable urban energy systems in the Asia Pacific region. The publication will be released in the last quarter of 2017 and members will be able to download it from the portal www.apuea.org.

Future publications will be undertaken based on the priorities of the membership. As a standard procedure, the Secretariat will survey all new members to understand their priorities and determine how the Association can best serve their needs.

About the Asia Pacific Urban Energy Association (APUEA)

The APUEA is an initiative of the International Institute for Energy Conservation (IIEC), a not-for-profit organization that has been promoting sustainable energy and environmental solutions in developing and emerging economies – including in the fast developing urban sector – for more than three decades. The APUEA platform promotes public and private sector collaboration to develop sustainable urban energy systems that support livable cities across the Asia Pacific region. The Association's online portal serves as an information hub to support city policymakers, program managers, and other stakeholders in the design, development, and implementation of sustainable urban energy systems. Through this portal, APUEA events, and continuous outreach to its members, the Association shares international and regional best practices for planning and implementing sustainable urban energy systems – including policies and regulations, business models, and technologies for implementing district heating and cooling, smart grids, energy efficiency improvements, and renewable energy systems.
