Note from the Executive Director

APUEA continues to grow into a solid platform promoting the development of sustainable urban energy systems in the Asia Pacific region. In January, we participated in the ASEAN Cooling Summit in Bangkok, hosted by The Kigali Cooling Efficiency Program (K-CEP) in partnership with Eco-Business and United Nations Environment. The summit provided insight into challenges as well as solutions for coping with the increasing cooling demand in ASEAN countries.

We are delighted that new members are signing up to benefit from the Association. We are glad to welcome ABB and China District Heating Association (CDHA) as two of our newest members; their profiles are provided below. APUEA and CDHA are planning joint activities for 2018, including conferences, seminars and knowledge exchanges. More information on these activities will be presented in future newsletters.

In this issue of the newsletter you can also read about our newly established APUEA tracks – our focus areas for promoting sustainable urban energy systems, which are defined in dialogue with our members. We look forward to working with all of you during the coming months to pursue activities and collaboration through these tracks.

Mikael Jakobsson, Executive Director, Asia Pacific Urban Energy Association

Membership Section – Introducing ABB and CDHA

We will be introducing APUEA members in each of the monthly APUEA Newsletters. In this issue, it is our pleasure to introduce one of our Founding Members, ABB, and new affiliate member the China District Heating Association (CDHA).

ABB (ABBN: SIX Swiss Ex) is a pioneering technology leader in electrification products, robotics and motion, industrial automation and power grids, serving customers in utilities, industry and transport & infrastructure globally.

We are pleased to welcome the China District Heating Association (CHDA) as a new member of APUEA. CDHA is a national non-profit organization founded in 1987 by urban heating enterprises and related institutions and social groups in China.

The Association hosts numerous district energy conferences and bilateral events in China and has extensive experience collaborating with Asian, European and North American district energy enterprises and agencies. APUEA and CDHA will co-host a District Energy event in cooperation with the Danish Board of District Heating (DBDH) in Beijing in September 2018.

The mission of CDHA is to be a bridge between government agencies and enterprises in providing services, evaluating demands, regulating behaviour and achieving self-regulatory development while following the Constitution, laws, regulations and policies and complying with social morality. CDHA works to protect the legitimate rights and interests of members, strengthen industry standards, and promote the sustainable development of district heating utilities. It is governed by the Chinese Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development (MOHURD) and registered under the Ministry of Civil Affairs (MCA).

Currently, CDHA has 515 members, including 179 heating suppliers, 194 equipment vendors and 123 universities, design institutes, heating offices and other service suppliers.

APUEA’s Urban Energy System Tracks

APUEA actively promotes the development of sustainable Urban Energy Systems in the Asia Pacific region. To be sustainable, an urban energy system must meet the needs of current urban populations without compromising the city’s liveability – including mobility, health, and safety – or the ability of future generations to meet their needs. In order to most effectively promote progress toward this goal, we are introducing the following APUEA Urban Energy System Tracks, which have been selected in dialogue with our members.

     1. District Energy

     2. Smart Grid

     3. Energy Storage

     4. Renewable Energy & Energy Efficiency

     5. Consumers and Prosumers

     6. Policies, Finance and Regulatory Frameworks

These tracks will help define and organize APUEA’s activities, and will be visible in our publications, on the APUEA website, and in our collaborative activities with our members. APUEA also will team up with partners that have unique knowledge of the specific tracks. Our goal is to offer a comprehensive knowledge database for sustainable Urban Energy Systems to our members and partners.

About the Asia Pacific Urban Energy Association (APUEA)

The APUEA is an initiative of the International Institute for Energy Conservation (IIEC), a not-for-profit organization that has been promoting sustainable energy and environmental solutions in developing and emerging economies – including in the fast developing urban sector – for more than three decades. The APUEA platform promotes public and private sector collaboration to develop sustainable urban energy systems that support livable cities across the Asia Pacific region. The Association's online portal serves as an information hub to support city policymakers, program managers, and other stakeholders in the design, development, and implementation of sustainable urban energy systems. Through this portal, APUEA events, and continuous outreach to its members, the Association shares international and regional best practices for planning and implementing sustainable urban energy systems – including policies and regulations, business models, and technologies for implementing district heating and cooling, smart grids, energy efficiency improvements, and renewable energy systems.
